An Act establishing a sick leave bank for Marie Letendre

By Massachusetts Legislature on September 14, 2025

Bill Text

Notwithstanding any general or special law to the contrary, the Department of Transitional Assistance shall establish a sick leave bank for Marie Letendre, an employee of the Department. Any employee of the Department may voluntarily contribute 1 or more sick, personal or vacation days to the sick leave bank for use by Marie Letendre.  If Marie Letendre terminates employment with the Department or requests to dissolve the sick leave bank, any remaining time in the sick leave bank shall be transferred to the extended illness leave bank. Sick leave bank days shall not be used for absences unrelated to the illness or disability that necessitated the establishment of the sick leave bank as determined by the Department.

Maybe this is naive, I haven’t dug into this, but since it appeared on the feed–if someone is genuinely sick, I really don’t see the point in employers having employees “donate” sick days. Why is it more feasible to carve out an exception for others to donate than it is to just let a truly sick person take a few extra paid days off? Are things really so dire that the exact number of total sick days needs to be baked in for all employees? Seems unrealistic to me.

These types of measures pop up in local feel-good news feeds from time to time, but I feel like they’re more damning than hopeful.
