Did you know that your Massachusetts state legislators’ pay largely depends on the whims of their leaders, in the forms of stipends? Consider the effect it has on our lawmaking process that much of the money they receive for doing their job is contingent on whether a few people at the top decide to dole it out. When considering the transparency crisis we face on Beacon Hill, it’s not difficult to understand the role this plays.
What can we do?
Support stipend reform! These anti-democratic measures take hold because of the “banality of corruption”–it’s not easy to get your average person to care about the inner workings of the state legislature when housing, pay, energy, and transportation are all in crisis. However, this issue is at the heart of all of these issues. The top brass of the Massachusetts state legislature has an iron grip on our elected representatives, vastly reducing our collective democratic power.
Support this measure making it on the 2026 ballot vote for it, and help in the fight to make Massachusetts more transparent, fairer, and for the People.
